spring/summer wardrobe

May 10, 2011

Got couple of emails from parents asking for wardrobe suggestions for their upcoming spring/summer photo sessions.  It can be a very fun and stress-free process picking out your wardrobe when you follow these guidelines:

1.  Come up with a theme.  Context for your photo session will help you to build your wardrobe.  Theme can be strawberry picking picnic, vintage ice cream parlor, beach side vacation, all-American red/white/blue…. etc
2. Pick 2 and no more than 3 sets of wardrobes.  It’s more productive to have your wardrobe changed once during your 60-90 mins session.  The 3rd set can be your backup if you change your mind or something does not work with the location.
3.  Start with a basic neutral (white/denim, white/khaki, grey/black, …etc) and add in one or two accent colors or/and elements to build your wardrobe
4.  Layer different textures to create visual effects (satin tank top with chunky cable woven cardigan, khaki pants with textured linen shirt, flowy silk tunic dress with leather strappy sandals)
5.  Avoid mixing bright primary colors, bold patterns, stripes, and logo/text on your clothing since they are quite distracting and tricky to handle especially for session with more than 2 participants.
6.  Little ones can wear bolder colors and patterns while parents can wear tone down neutral outfit
7.  Avoid plain bright white outfit especially for outdoor/beach locations with limited shades.  If you love white, choose textured and patterned white clothing and mix with other neutral (beige/grey).
8.  Wisely selected props and accessories will enhance your wardrobe.  Try wearing scarves with plain color t-shirt or tank tops; all black outfit with patent red heels; funky color socks or ties for guys.
9. Props can be food as well.  Eating strawberries and watermelon can be a very fun thing to do for kids while sharing an ice cream sundae or milkshake can be very cute for engagement session.
10.  Of course…. you got to wear something you feel comfortable with and make yourself happy  =)
Here are some concepts for your inspirations.  You can easily find these items at major chain retail stores: Banana Republic, Gap, Old Navy, J.Crew, Zara, Mango, Target and Gymboree.  Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.  Can’t wait to see you all this summer.
